The Freshmen AVID classes have been doing AMAZING on their tutorials. The one area that they all needed a little extra help on, in order for them to have a perfect tutorial, was their Point of Confusion questions. Originally students were writing level 1 questions. Level 1, in Costa's level of questioning, is a simple questions that requires 90% of the text and 10% of the brain. Students read classic Dr. Seuss books and had to write level 1 questions, then pass their sticky note to the right and then had to elevate the original question into a level 2 questions. Level 2 questions require 50% of the text 50% of the brain. Next, students passed to the right once again and now they had to read and elevate the first two questions and develop a level 3 questions. A level 3 question requires 90% brain. Students surprised themselves at their ability to take a child's book and use it to create a level 3 question. Students now have their sticky notes that have all 3 levels so they can go back to them if they ever feel stuck. They also have multiple handouts that can assit them in writing high level thinking questions. Since this exercise, students have perfected their tutorials and are continously writing level 2 and level 3 questions. I could not be more proud of the hard work they in each and every day.
